SD-15.1 — Investment Product Strategy

Business Domain: BD-15 Distribution, Product & Client Management (Commercial) · Applies: BOTH

Purpose

Decides which strategies and vehicles the firm offers — the product roadmap. SD-15.1 answers what should the firm sell: it generates and assesses product ideas, sets the product roadmap, decides whether to build, buy or partner for a capability, and shapes the firm’s product range against client demand and the competitive landscape. A product the firm cannot sell is wasted capability; a gap in the range is lost flow. It is not the building of a product — that is SD-15.2 — and it is not investment strategy, which is BD-01 (the strategy of a portfolio); SD-15.1 is the strategy of the product range.

Service Operations

  • Generate and assess product ideas — source product ideas from client demand, distribution intelligence and the competitive landscape, and assess them.
  • Set the product roadmap — maintain the firm’s product roadmap and the priorities for new strategies and vehicles.
  • Make the build / buy / partner decision — decide whether to build a capability in-house, acquire it, or partner / sub-advise for it.
  • Shape the product range — manage the breadth and coherence of the product shelf against client segments and demand.
  • Analyse the competitive and demand position — track the competitive product landscape and client demand to inform the strategy.

Inputs and outputs

  • Inputs: client demand and distribution intelligence from SD-15.4 / SD-15.7; the competitive landscape; the firm’s investment capabilities; the firm’s strategy.
  • Outputs: the product roadmap and the product-strategy decisions — consumed by SD-15.2 Product Development & Launch and the firm’s governance.

Entities

  • Consumes: PM-01 Fund & Vehicle, E-03 Portfolio / Mandate; the SD-15.4 client demand and distribution intelligence; the SD-15.7 client demand and distribution intelligence.
  • Owns: the product roadmap — a process artefact.
  • Open question: a Product entity — the firm’s offering as an owned, governed record, anchored in SD-15.3 and shared across the product cluster (SD-15.1–15.3).

Standards

  • No single external standard governs product strategy; the consultancy product-strategy frameworks and the Cerulli product-research practice are the references.

Open extensions

  • A Product entity.
  • The build / buy / partner sub-model.
  • The Service-Operation-level input/output contracts.
