SD-01.1 — Investment Beliefs & Philosophy
Business Domain: BD-01 Investment Strategy & Allocation (Front office) · Applies: BOTH
Purpose
Maintains the firm’s foundational, durable stance on how markets work and how it intends to invest — the layer above any single mandate. Investment beliefs are the small set of propositions the firm holds about market efficiency, the rewards for bearing risk and illiquidity, the value of active management, diversification, time horizon and responsible investment. They are firm-wide, change rarely, and are the explicit reference point every mandate, allocation and selection decision is made against. Where SD-01.2 defines the mandate of a specific pool of capital, this Service Domain owns the convictions that shape how every mandate is written.
Service Operations
- Articulate investment beliefs — state the firm’s propositions on market efficiency, risk premia, the illiquidity premium, active versus passive, and the value of diversification.
- Define the investment philosophy — the firm’s intended approach: how it expects to generate return, the edge it claims, and the role each major capability plays.
- Set the responsible-investment stance — the firm’s position on sustainability, stewardship and exclusions, held as an investment belief rather than an external constraint.
- Articulate the time-horizon stance — whether the firm treats its horizon as a structural advantage, and what that licenses it to do that a shorter-horizon investor cannot.
- Govern belief review — the deliberate, infrequent process by which beliefs are re-examined and changed.
- Disseminate beliefs to the investment function — make the beliefs the operative reference point for mandate definition, allocation and selection.
Inputs and outputs
- Inputs: the institution’s purpose and owner expectations; governing-body direction; the evidence base on long-run market behaviour.
- Outputs: a stated set of investment beliefs and an investment-philosophy statement — consumed by SD-01.2 Investment Mandate & Policy Definition, which encodes them into mandates, and referenced across the selection and portfolio domains BD-02 to BD-05.
Entities
- Consumes: none directly — investment beliefs are a firm-level governance statement, not derived from a master record.
- Owns: none. An investment belief is a governance artefact, not a master entity.
Standards
- No external standard governs investment beliefs. The CFA Institute frames them as the foundation of the portfolio-management process; large asset owners increasingly publish a formal investment-beliefs statement, and that practice is the de-facto reference.
Open extensions
- Whether a formal Investment Beliefs artefact warrants a reference structure rather than remaining a governance document.
- The relationship to a firm-wide responsible-investment policy where that is held outside BD-01.
