SD-02.7 — Research Management & Coverage

Business Domain: BD-02 Securities Research & Selection (Front office) · Applies: PUB

Purpose

Runs the research function’s operating model — who covers what, how research flows, and how the research record is kept. Where SD-02.1 to SD-02.6 are the research-and-selection chain, this Service Domain is the operating model the chain runs inside: it assigns coverage, manages the analyst workflow, and maintains the timestamped record of notes, models and decisions that is the firm’s research memory. The research management system is the tool that automates it.

Service Operations

  • Define the coverage model — assign analysts by sector, region, market-cap or style; decide central versus team analysts, generalist versus specialist.
  • Set coverage initiation and cadence — decide which names are covered, when coverage begins, and the cadence at which it is refreshed.
  • Manage the research workflow — note authoring, review and publication through the research management system.
  • Maintain the research record — the timestamped, searchable, auditable record of notes, models and decisions — the firm’s research memory.
  • Track ideas — record both acted and unacted ideas, for accountability over what the research function surfaced.
  • Manage corporate access and expert networks — arrange and document management meetings and expert calls, within the information-barrier controls.
  • Control research entitlements — manage, in the research management system, which external content the firm is authorised to receive.

Inputs and outputs

  • Inputs: analyst capacity and coverage assignments; the research output of SD-02.1 to SD-02.6; the research management system.
  • Outputs: the coverage map, the research record, the audit trail and the workflow metrics — supporting every other Service Domain in BD-02 and the portfolio managers of BD-05.

Entities

  • Consumes: Legal Entity (E-01) and Instrument / Asset (E-02) for the coverage universe; Document Metadata (E-15) for the research record; the SD-02.1 research output; the SD-02.6 research output.
  • Owns: none — the coverage map and research record are operating-model artefacts, held in the research management system.

Standards

  • The research management system is the system category. MiFID II entitlement controls (including the reverse-entitlement block on unpaid content) apply to what external content the firm may receive. Corporate access and expert-network use are subject to the firm’s information-barrier and market-abuse controls (BD-10).

Open extensions

  • The boundary with SD-02.8 on entitlements — SD-02.7 controls, in the research management system, what content flows in; SD-02.8 decides which providers are paid.
  • Whether the research record is modelled through Document Metadata (E-15) or warrants its own structure.
