SD-12.7 — Income & Distribution Processing
Business Domain: BD-12 Investment Operations & Servicing (Back office) · Applies: BOTH
Purpose
Processes investment income and distribution cash as it is received — coupons on debt, dividends on equity, income on other holdings, and the cash leg of a private-market distribution — booking the receipt, running the accrual, and applying withholding tax. Income arrives continuously across the book, on a forward-known or expected schedule, and the firm must recognise it, accrue it between cash dates, collect it, and account for the tax withheld. SD-12.7 is that capability. It exists because income receipt is a distinct, schedule-driven operational flow — separate from the events that announce income and separate from the events that create a distribution. It is not corporate-actions processing — SD-12.6 processes the dividend or coupon event and its terms; SD-12.7 books the cash when it pays — and it is not capital-call-and-distribution processing — SD-12.8 captures and classifies a fund distribution event (PM-08); SD-12.7 is the income-and-cash receipt engine the distribution cash then flows through. SD-12.7 owns income cash and its accrual; SD-12.6 owns the corporate event; SD-12.8 owns the fund-commitment event.
Service Operations
- Coupon and dividend receipt — process the receipt of coupon and dividend cash against the affected holdings, matching the receipt to the expected entitlement.
- Income accrual — accrue income — particularly bond interest — daily against the next scheduled payment, so the book carries earned-but-unreceived income between cash dates.
- Distribution cash booking — book the cash leg of a private-market distribution once SD-12.8 has captured and classified the distribution event, recording it against the commitment and portfolio.
- Withholding-tax application — apply the withholding tax deducted at source on cross-border income, recording the gross income, the tax withheld and the net received.
- Income claim and shortfall management — identify income that has not arrived as expected, and raise the claim against the custodian or paying agent.
- Income reconciliation — reconcile income received against the income expected from the schedule and the corporate-action entitlement, and resolve differences.
- Income classification — classify each receipt — coupon, dividend, return of capital, income, gain — so it is correctly accounted and correctly fed to performance and tax.
Inputs and outputs
- Inputs: the income schedule (PB-08) from SD-13.1; cash dividend and coupon events from SD-12.6; captured and classified fund distributions (PM-08) from SD-12.8; custodian income advices; holdings from SD-12.1.
- Outputs: booked income and distribution cash, accruals and withholding-tax records — consumed by SD-12.2 ABOR (income accrual into the accounting book), SD-12.9 Fund Accounting & NAV, SD-09.1 Performance Measurement (income return), SD-12.10 Reconciliation, and SD-17.4 Investment & Portfolio Tax (the withholding-tax record and the reclaim trail).
Entities
Consumes: PB-08 Income Schedule (the expected income), PB-07 Corporate Action (cash dividends and coupons), PM-08 Distribution (the captured fund distribution), E-06 Cash Flow Event (cash_flow_type = coupon / dividend / income / distribution), E-04 Holding / Position (book = ibor — income receipt is processed against the live IBOR position), FO-02 Share / Unit Class (the class declaration policy — distribution_policy determines whether an income class distributes or accumulates; class_currency governs the distribution currency), FO-03 Investor Unitholding (units held at the record date — the per-investor FO-03 units_held at the record date, multiplied by FO-05 distribution_per_unit, yields each investor’s cash entitlement for SD-12.15 to pay); the SD-12.1 holdings; the SD-12.6 cash dividend and coupon events; the SD-12.8 captured and classified fund distributions (PM-08); the SD-13.1 income schedule (PB-08).
Owns: FO-05 Fund Distribution Event (the open-ended-fund distribution declaration — declaration, ex-date, record date, pay date, per-unit income amount and equalisation — the crystallised output of the income accrual engine that SD-12.7 runs).
Standards
- ISO 20022 / ISO 15022 — the messaging standards custodian income advices are delivered on (the ISO 15022 MT566 corporate-action confirmation and income-advice messages and their ISO 20022 successors).
- Double-taxation treaties and local withholding-tax regimes — govern the rate withheld at source and the reclaim the firm is entitled to; the reclaim itself is run by SD-17.4.
- Income accrual follows the accounting standard the ABOR is kept to (IFRS / local GAAP) — day-count conventions for interest accrual are instrument-level reference data.
Open extensions
- The Service-Operation-level input/output contracts.
- The withholding-tax sub-record — whether the gross / tax / net and reclaim-status detail warrants a structured sub-record shared with SD-17.4 Investment & Portfolio Tax, rather than being attributes on the cash flow.
- The income-claim lifecycle — claim raised, chased, recovered or written off.
- Monthly distribution accrual sub-record — for funds that accrue daily and pay monthly.
